I started my new job as a volunteer coordinator last monday. I was super excited for the new opportunity and confident at the beginning, but now I feel like I don’t know anything and may never succeed in this job.
Is it usual to feel completely incompetent and overwhelmed the first week in a new position?

It usually takes me about a month to feel like I know what I’m doing.

Thanks Ashley. I am hoping I get up to speed soon. I feel so out of place and insecure!!

I started a new job in January with hardly any training. I remember going home after the first day and thinking what the heck did I get myself into, I can’t do this. I was so overwhelmed, but now being there for two months I love it. Just don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions until you are a hundred percent confident in how everything works. You’ll be just fine. ❤️

You are feeling totally normal! Don’t fret, it will get easier, it will take a couple more weeks, hang in there! I’m looking for a job myself, dreading actually finding one!

Thank you!! Yes, that’s the feeling. Wanting one and then getting one and it’s a whole different world of new and scary things. Good luck to you!!!

I think that it often takes more than a month to learn a new job. See if someone is willing to help you through this period. Think about what questions you have and who might be responsive and how to get through while being kind to yourself..

It is totally normal! Some jobs it takes a month or so to really get a handle, and other times it can take much longer, just depending on the place/product/training, etc! Don’t even worry about it. Just try to ride the wave and absorb as much as you can, and take good notes! 🙂
